Developmental Sales / Management Training Program

This program has been developed to prepare candidates for a fulfilling future career in the parts, service and sales departments of Mustang Cat. The overall objective of this program is to prepare the candidate to understand the construction machinery business and the functions of a Caterpillar dealership. Specific objectives of the developmental training program are:

  • Gain operational understanding of our business
  • Gain industrial understanding of our product line
  • Gain rapport with technicians in the shop areas
  • Provide an opportunity to demonstrate work ethic
  • Provide an opportunity to demonstrate safety awareness
  • Progress to special projects in Branch, Field or Shop locations
  • Promote to a Supervisory, Management or Sales position

The Process
A schedule indicating specific areas for training of the parts and service operation is handed out. Introductions are made to the foreman and supervisor in the areas indicated on the schedule. He/she will be working directly for that foreman for the period of the assignment. These assignments are typically scheduled for as little as two weeks to several months depending on the variety and complexity of the work being performed.

During these assignments, he/she works with mechanics, service personnel and parts warehouse personnel while performing entry-level tasks. He/she will learn our parts and service operations as well as how various products are designed and operate. This aspect of training allows management to appraise work ethics and interpersonal relationship skills. Due to the size and weight of the machines, engines and components Mustang employees deal with on an hourly basis, safety is of the utmost importance and he/she is monitored for his demonstration of safety awareness for himself and others.

As he/she progresses through training, the foremen and supervisors will be working with them on the operational procedures. Quoting and service workorder structures in the shop service operation, scheduling in field service and parts order processing including stockorder and backorder option procedures in the parts operations are introduced.

The formal parts and service training will include training in the following areas:

  • Service Operations
    • Undercarriage and Weld Shop
    • Revenue Service Shop
    • Component Shop
    • Engine Service
    • Field Service Operations
    • CSA Group – PM Services
  • Parts Operations
    • Warehouse
    • Inventory Control
    • Operations Center
    • Parts Counter
    • Mini-Branch
    • Used Parts Operations
    • Parts Specialist
  • Technical Services
    • SOS Lab
    • Technical Communications
    • Warranty Operations

In addition, he/she will be enrolled in a computer-based training program from Caterpillar entitled "Parts Pro". This program is designed with the following modules:

  • This Is Caterpillar
    • The Caterpillar Organization
    • The Cat Product Line
  • Parts, Products and Services
    • Drive Train
    • Managing and Equipment Investment
    • Ground Engaging Tools
    • Hydraulics
    • Maintenance and General Usage Products
    • Remanufactured Products
    • Undercarriage
  • Engine Products
    • Engine Basics and Parts
    • Commercial Engines
    • Truck Engines
    • Machine Engines
  • Information Resources
    • Electronic Information Sources
    • Print Information Resources
  • Customer Relations and Selling Skills

He/she will work on the module that is relevant to the scheduled area at the time. I.E., if he/she is in the undercarriage shop, he will spend _ day per week on the Undercarriage module until completion, (approximately 4 sessions). More insight into the system design and quality of the Cat product and Mustang service is gained.

The Parts Pro Training modules are a pre-requisite for any formal Caterpillar training sessions conducted.

Upon completion of the formal parts and service training schedule, he/she should have a very good understanding of the structure of Mustang Cat and the value of services we provide our customers.

Sales Training
Upon completion of the parts and service training program, those that are designated to go into a sales function will receive additional training in sales programs, quoting parts and service, flat rate and standard job systems, sales software training – CTS 2000, Overhaul Management Guide, Maintenance Control System, Infocast, etc.

In addition, the Product Support Representatives serve other Mustang departments such as Mustang Rental Services, Mustang Sales Department or other group. This training will allow the PSR to utilize these sales tools and hone his/her new skills while getting "in-the-iron" experience in a more controlled environment.

Special Projects
Periodically, Mustang has special projects that are outside the scope of normal staff positions and requires a person dedicated for a specific period of time. Those in the advanced stages or at the end of their training schedule may be assigned to these special projects. Normally, these projects are less than a year in length, but some could continue for longer periods.

They are also used to fill in for positions that have been vacated for various reasons. He/she may be directed to temporarily suspend the formal training schedule to assume duties at a branch parts or service operation until the position is filled.

Time
Obviously, a training program of this magnitude will take significant time. The overall timeframe of this program is subject to the need of Mustang to fill a territory or specific need. The program is flexible and will be adjusted as necessary to meet the obligations that Mustang Cat has in the industry. It is our intent to provide them with the best training and preparation to perform with competency the tasks that are required in the area to which they are assigned. No specific timeframe is guaranteed for him/her to be assigned a management or sales position.
